Why College Coaches Matter at South Sound Wrestling Camp
When most wrestlers think about summer camp, they think about getting better, learning new techniques, and competing against tough partners. Those things are important, but there is another benefit that often gets overlooked:
Exposure.
Every year, South Sound Wrestling Camp brings in college coaches from multiple levels of wrestling, including junior colleges, NAIA programs, NCAA Division III, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division I schools. Our goal is simple: get wrestlers in front of coaches who can help create future opportunities.
As a coach who has helped many athletes continue their wrestling careers after high school, I’ve learned one thing:
If coaches don’t see you, they may never know who you are.
In the last two years alone, six campers have gone on to sign with programs whose coaches attended our camp. Those opportunities started because coaches got to see those wrestlers firsthand—not just their results, but their work ethic, attitude, coachability, and competitiveness.
A coach might notice a wrestler who takes down a state placer, battles with a state champion, or simply competes with relentless effort throughout the week. Those moments matter.
This year, we’re working to bring even more college coaches into the room, including additional programs from Oregon. Providing exposure to coaches at every level remains one of our top priorities because every wrestler’s path is different, and every opportunity starts with being seen.
If you’re serious about improving and want the chance to get in front of college coaches, we hope you’ll join us this summer.
