Work Hard. Have Fun.

One of the biggest misconceptions about wrestling is that success only comes from constant grinding. While hard work is absolutely necessary, I’ve never believed that kids need to be miserable to be successful.

In fact, after more than 20 years of coaching, I’ve found the opposite to be true.

When wrestlers are having fun, they’re more engaged, more coachable, and often work harder than athletes who feel like they’re simply surviving practice. When kids enjoy being in the room, they focus on learning instead of worrying about wins, losses, rankings, and pressure.

Now, when I say fun, I’m not talking about turning camp into recess. Wrestling is still wrestling. We train hard. We push ourselves. But we also believe in creating an environment where kids enjoy the process. Sometimes that’s a joke from a coach, a fun challenge, a unique drill, or simply changing the pace when the room needs it.

One of our strengths at South Sound Wrestling Camp is our ability to read the room. Every group is different, and we try to tailor parts of camp to the wrestlers who are there. That’s why you might see breakout sessions for girls, heavyweights, lightweights, or additional time spent on positions that the group needs most.

We have a schedule, but we’re not afraid to adjust when it benefits the wrestlers.

Good wrestling isn’t rigid—it flows. We believe coaching should too.

Our goal is simple: create an environment where wrestlers can work hard, improve, and have fun doing it. Because when kids enjoy the process, amazing things happen.
